## Biography

Bernard Smith (1907–1999) was an American film producer and literary editor. After a career in publishing, he moved to Hollywood in 1947 and worked as a script editor for Samuel Goldwyn before becoming an independent producer.

He produced *Elmer Gantry* (1960), directed by Richard Brooks, and *How the West Was Won* (1962). Both films received Academy Award nominations for Best Picture. Smith later collaborated with director John Ford on *Cheyenne Autumn* (1964) and *7 Women* (1965). He retired from film production in 1971 and published a memoir, *A World Remembered: 1925–1950*, in 1994.
