## Biography

Bernard Spear (1919–2003) was an English actor. He appeared in the 1968 film *Chitty Chitty Bang Bang* as the Second Spy, and in other films including *Bedazzled* (1967), *The Adventures of Barry McKenzie* (1972), *Yentl* (1983) as the Tailor, and *The Man Who Cried* (2000).

On stage, he played dual roles in the 1968 London production of *Man of La Mancha* and appeared in West End musicals such as *Hello, Dolly!*. His television work included the BAFTA-winning play *Bar Mitzvah Boy* (1976) and a regular role in the soap *Albion Market* (1985–86), as well as episodes of *Lovejoy*.

Born in Croydon, Surrey, Spear served in the Royal Artillery during the Second World War. He married dancer and writer Mary Newton in 1949; they had one son.
