Born in Danzig in 1884, he trained as an actor and worked in theatres in Hagen and Dresden before joining Max Reinhardt’s companies in Berlin. He was a long-serving member of the Berlin Schillertheater. Goetzke appeared in more than 130 films between 1917 and 1961. His film debut came in Robert Wiene’s *Fear* (1917). He became known for leading and prominent roles in Fritz Lang’s silent films, including Death in *Destiny* (1921), Prosecutor von Wenk in *Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler* (1922), and Volker von Alzeÿ in both parts of *Die Nibelungen* (1924). He also played the lead in Alfred Hitchcock’s *The Mountain Eagle* (1926).
