## Biography

Bertrand Tavernier was a French film director, screenwriter and producer. He was born on 25 April 1941 in Lyon and died on 25 March 2021 in Sainte-Maxime.

He began in the film industry as an assistant director, press officer and critic before making his feature debut with *The Watchmaker of St Paul* (1974). Several of his early films starred Philippe Noiret, including *The Judge and the Assassin* (1976) and *Coup de Torchon* (1981). Later work encompassed a range of genres, such as *'Round Midnight* (1986), *Life and Nothing But* (1989) and *The Princess of Montpensier* (2010).

Tavernier served as president of the Institut Lumière from its founding in 1982 until his death. He appeared as himself in the 1988 documentary *Hôtel Terminus: The Life and Times of Klaus Barbie*.
