## Biography

Bill Bain (born Allen William Bain) was an Australian television and film director. He trained as a schoolteacher before joining the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in the 1950s, where he directed the country’s first television pantomime in 1959 and several early TV plays.

Bain moved to Britain in 1963 and directed episodes of numerous series, including *The Avengers* (1961), *Public Eye* (1965) and *Callan* (1967). He was the principal director of *Upstairs, Downstairs* and *The Duchess of Duke Street*, and he directed the feature film *What Became of Jack and Jill?* (1972). In 1975 he received a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series for the *Upstairs, Downstairs* episode “The Sudden Storm”.

He married British actress Rosemary Frankau in 1968. Bain died in London on 22 February 1982, aged 52.
