## Fi1m on Bill Camp

> Bill Camp makes supporting characters seem occupied with something other than the star. We rate his understatement, though some films give him a task and scarcely enough time to suggest the person doing it.

In *Drive-Away Dolls* (2024), Bill Camp’s Curlie runs the car lot where Jamie and Marian are handed the wrong keys. Ethan Coen’s comedy needs him to help set the trouble going, not to stop proceedings for an actor’s turn. Camp’s strength is that he can fit into an ensemble without making a supporting role feel like an audition for the lead. We like that understatement, but it does not make this brisk, slight comedy any more substantial.

He spent the 1990s and 2000s in supporting parts after *Reversal of Fortune* (1990), with wider recognition arriving in the early 2010s. Television helped establish him through Detective Dennis Box in *The Night Of* (2016) and the mentor Mr. Shaibel in *The Queen’s Gambit* (2020). These are different kinds of authority, both well suited to an actor who need not announce his importance. He is comfortable playing someone with a job to do, without asking for special attention whenever he does it. That restraint works across drama and comedy.

The limit is plain in *How to Make a Killing* (2026), where he plays Warren Redfellow alongside fellow relatives played by Ed Harris, Zach Woods and Topher Grace. John Patton Ford gives these good actors a scene or two apiece, and editor Harrison Atkins cuts the action quickly and cleanly. We were frustrated by how briefly the family registered, because there was scarcely time to take an interest in them. The film keeps moving when it could usefully stop and let its supporting actors make somebody uncomfortable.

*Sirens* (2025), with Camp as Bruce DeWitt, is the more rewarding evening, though Meghann Fahy and the sisters’ strained relationship are its chief pleasures. Our regard for Camp is no promise that every production will use him well. Small parts can be functional, and quiet acting alone will not make an underwritten character interesting. Try *The Night Of* before judging him by the films that only borrow him for a scene.
