## Fi1m on Bill Dubuque

> Bill Dubuque writes ordinary men who talk their way out of trouble and then have to live inside what they said. At his best, in *Ozark*, that is enough for two seasons. His weakness is letting in more plot than the people can carry.

Marty Byrde launders money for a Mexican drug cartel, his partner has been caught stealing from it, and Marty is about to pay for the theft with his life. So he talks. His pitch is the Lake of the Ozarks, a resort region full of cash businesses and short of anyone looking, and it buys him his life. That is the Bill Dubuque scene: a financial adviser keeping himself alive with a sentence, and all four seasons of *Ozark* (2017) grew out of it. Dubuque spent twelve years as a corporate headhunter in St. Louis before he wrote anything, and he says the job taught him the trade: "More than anything else, my inspiration for the dialogue and the scenery come from headhunting. When you’re on the phone and you don’t see these people, you’ve got to fill in the blanks. It’s just like writing a scene."

He began writing around 2008, and his first produced screenplay was *The Judge* (2014), a father-and-son story. *The Accountant* and *A Family Man* followed in 2016, the first built around a carefully researched central character, the second drawn from the headhunting years. Then *Ozark*, co-created with the producer Mark Williams and Jason Bateman, ran four seasons and 44 episodes on that one improvisation. Since it ended in 2022 he has gone back to the films with *The Accountant 2* (2025) and to television with *His & Hers* (2026) and *M.I.A.* (2026). The pattern holds throughout: ordinary people, often with a family they are letting down, dropped into trouble a size too large for them.

When it works, it is because the trouble is simple and the person is not. *Ozark* gripped us for two seasons, because every episode tested whether Marty's improvisation would hold for another week, and because the show found in Julia Garner a performer worth more than the plot around her. Dubuque is good at fathers, and at adults still living with what a parent decided for them.

He is less good at stopping. *Ozark* is a good crime drama that runs longer than its ideas; the last two seasons are efficient rather than gripping, and the blue murk it is shot in becomes a joke. *His & Hers*, on which he shares credit with William Oldroyd, Tori Sampson and Dee Johnson, has the fault in a purer form. Suspicion moves every episode without a reason to believe what anyone is doing, and the decisions exist to set up the next surprise. We were irritated, because Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal kept supplying the credibility the writing had skipped, and another possible explanation is a poor reward for paying attention. Critics have said the same of the *Accountant* films: too many threads, too many detours.

He remains a writer worth following into the first two seasons of anything. After that, count the plots.
