## Fi1m on Bill Kerr

> Bill Kerr's dry Australian drawl could make a comic fool convincing or give a drama a steady start. We value him most in supporting parts such as *Gallipoli*, where he is a grounding presence.

Bill Kerr is the first voice heard in Peter Weir's *Gallipoli* (1981), and his Australian drawl gives the film a reassuringly steady start. As Jack, he has an early scene with Mark Lee that shows how useful an unshowy supporting actor can be. We like the lack of fuss. Kerr lets us pay attention to the scene without drawing us away from it to admire the performance.

The same dry delivery had made him useful to comedy, though the parts did not always give him enough to do. In the radio series *Hancock's Half Hour* (1954–59), alongside Tony Hancock and Sid James, his Australian lodger was often the slow-witted butt of the joke. The part became increasingly one-dimensional, a limitation worth separating from Kerr's skill at delivering a line. His appearance as Flight Lieutenant H. B. Martin in *The Dam Busters* (1955) also belongs to this British period; the dramatic work did not begin with his return to Australia.

That return, in 1979, shifted his work towards film and television character parts. Weir cast him as Colonel Henderson in *The Year of Living Dangerously* (1982), while *Razorback* (1984) gave him the role of Jake Cullen in a horror film. The laconic manner suited dramatic work too, so this change of emphasis need not be treated as a complete reinvention. The earlier comedy is no reason to be surprised by his steadiness in *Gallipoli*.

We were moved by the two runners' friendship in *Gallipoli*, because the warmth of the acting gives us a reason to care about them. Kerr's grounding presence in the opening contributes to that warmth, even though the central friendship carries the film. Our reservations concern the training scenes, which linger, and the blunt portrayal of British command. Neither is a reason to overlook the patient work of the actors. Start here, and give the first voice on the soundtrack your attention.

## Biography

Bill Kerr (1922–2014) was a British and Australian actor. Born William Henry Kerr in Cape Town, South Africa, to a performing arts family, he grew up in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, Australia. He began his career as a child actor in Australian vaudeville and radio, making his screen debut in *Harmony Row* (1933), billed as Willie Kerr.

After the Second World War he moved to Britain. There he gained prominence through BBC radio, notably a recurring role as an Australian lodger in *Hancock's Half Hour* during the 1950s, and stage work including the original West End production of *Damn Yankees*. British screen credits include *The Dam Busters* (1955) and a guest role in the *Doctor Who* serial *The Enemy of the World* (1968).

Kerr returned to Australia in 1979 and appeared in character roles in several films, including Peter Weir’s *Gallipoli* (1981) as Jack and *The Year of Living Dangerously* (1982) as Colonel Henderson. Later credits include *Razorback* (1984) and *Peter Pan* (2003). He died in Perth, Western Australia.
