## Fi1m on Bill Nighy

> Bill Nighy can make an impatient man good company without softening him. We value his precise delivery and small gestures, though familiar parts can leave him with little more to do than be droll.

In *State of Play* (2003), Bill Nighy makes an impatient line sound worth listening to. His Cameron Foster contributes much of the dry humour to Paul Abbott’s six-part newsroom thriller. We were grateful for that humour: with so much information to follow, his delivery made listening a pleasure rather than a duty. Foster remains a convincing professional, and Nighy does not need to make him agreeable to make him interesting. It is a particularly useful skill in a series whose complicated story sometimes demands too much bookkeeping.

That combination of comic precision and credible authority helps explain the turn his screen career took in 2003. Alongside *State of Play*, he played Billy Mack in *Love Actually* (2003) and Viktor in *Underworld* (2003). *Love Actually* brought him wider international attention, and the subsequent mixture of large supporting parts, television work and occasional leads has kept him from doing only one kind of job. His recurring collaborations with David Hare, on stage and screen, have also put his self-mocking manner to work in morally complicated characters.

The warmth matters too. As Cardinal Lawrence, the novice Margaret’s sponsor in Arkasha Stevenson’s *The First Omen* (2024), he is warm and tired, which makes the clerical authority feel human. Nell Tiger Free carries the film; Nighy is useful here without needing to turn his contribution into a comic occasion. Chris Sanders’s *The Wild Robot* (2024) gives him the voice of Longneck, the old goose who leads the flock, another supporting figure with authority. We recommend that film for its warmth, though the action-heavy last third is less affecting than what precedes it.

The reservation is how often a part seems satisfied with the familiar drollness. *Living* (2022), with Nighy leading as Mr Williams in a role written for him, gives his restraint more emotional work to do. His small gestures make a quiet change in the character matter, and there is room to attend to them without waiting for the next joke. We would welcome more parts that ask as much of him. Start with *State of Play*, where the writing gives him plenty to be impatient about.

## Biography

Bill Nighy is a British actor. He was born William Francis Nighy on 12 December 1949 in Caterham, Surrey, England. He trained at the Guildford School of Acting and began his career with the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool before making his London debut at the Royal National Theatre in 1977.

Nighy gained acclaim for stage roles including work with David Hare, Harold Pinter, Tom Stoppard and Anton Chekhov. His film breakthrough came with the role of Billy Mack in *Love Actually* (2003), for which he received a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor. He is also known for portraying Davy Jones in the *Pirates of the Caribbean* films (2006–2007) and Viktor in the *Underworld* series (2003–2009).

His later credits include *The Wild Robot* (2024), in which he voiced Longneck, and *The First Omen* (2024), in which he played Cardinal Lawrence.
