## Fi1m on Bill Roe

> Bill Roe is a capable procedural director with a cinematographer's background, though *Castle* gives us more reason to follow its actors than its images. We recommend the company, with modest expectations of a distinctive visual style.

In *Castle* (2009), Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic hold our attention while the surroundings scarcely register. That suits an agreeable crime series whose central partnership is more dependable than its plotting. Roe's cinematography belongs to that practical approach, keeping the performers readable without making much of the surroundings. We enjoyed their conversations because the actors and the editing gave them an ease that the detective work could not always match.

His earlier cinematography suggests that the plainness is not down to a shortage of technique. He shot 84 episodes of *The X-Files* between 1998 and 2002, favouring darker lighting, silhouettes, depth and strong window light, with few practical lights. He began directing on *Castle* in 2010 and directed 22 episodes through 2016, moving into a different job on a programme he had also photographed.

That series is shared work, and it would be misleading to credit or blame Roe for every image. Daryn Okada and Michael Slovis are also credited with cinematography, while editors including Sue Blainey and Marta Evry help give the conversations their agreeable rhythm. The suspense is less consistently persuasive, and the modest visual character does little to distract from cases that strain belief. Even so, the presentation leaves room for the actors to make the programme inviting. We rate that as worthwhile television, with a clear limit to what its detective stories can deliver.

He went on to direct *The Blacklist* from 2016 and *The Rookie* from 2019, working again with Fillion on the latter. His duties on *The Rookie* have also included supervising director and executive producer, consistent with a career built on collaboration within established series. Those credits give us a substantial directing career to consider, though we would be cautious about claiming a personal style on their strength alone. Start with *Castle* for an evening that does not depend on the detective work standing up to close inspection.
