## Fi1m on Bill Skarsgård

> Bill Skarsgård makes threatening men funny without making them safe. We rate him most when the menace comes from a grin or a sudden movement; the elaborate creature performances can suffer when the monster has too much to explain.

In *Dead Man's Wire* (2026), Bill Skarsgård’s Tony Kiritsis grins just before he threatens someone, then turns too quickly. We flinched because the gun turned with him. That small, dangerous movement tells us what we value in Skarsgård: he can make us nervous while giving us reasons to keep listening. Gus Van Sant gives him room to make wounded pride both funny and dangerous.

His first major role came in *Simple Simon* (2010), before Pennywise in *It* (2017) brought his international breakthrough. *It Chapter Two* (2019) continued that association with horror, and monstrous parts requiring physical and vocal transformation have become a familiar part of his work. The Marquis in *John Wick: Chapter 4* (2023) offers a useful change: here the menace comes from a young man accustomed to getting his way. Skarsgård relishes the accent and the cuffs, giving the Marquis enough vanity to remain entertaining through the film’s lengthy explanations of its rules.

Robert Eggers’s *Nosferatu* (2024) asks for a much larger alteration, with Skarsgård playing Count Orlok as a rotting nobleman. He lowered his voice and used opera techniques for the part, but the audible result matters more than the effort: words arriving on an exhale. Kept in shadow in the castle, he is repellent and frightening. The talk of covenants and terms is less frightening, however, and the solemnity begins to work against him.

Van Sant gets more from allowing him to talk in *Dead Man's Wire*. Kiritsis wants the police, a radio station and anyone else within reach to hear how badly he has been treated, and Skarsgård makes his wounded logic horribly persuasive. We laughed at him, then disliked how readily we had gone along with him. The film leaves too much of its judgement to us, but for a way into Skarsgård’s work beyond the creatures, start there.

## Biography

Bill Skarsgård is a Swedish actor. Born on 9 August 1990 in Vällingby, Stockholm, he is the son of actor Stellan Skarsgård and began his career as a child actor in the 2000 film *White Water Fury*, appearing alongside his brother Alexander. He trained at Södra Latin and gained his first major role in *Simple Simon* (2010).

Skarsgård received international recognition for his lead performance in the television series *Hemlock Grove* (2013–2015). He is known for portraying Pennywise in the horror films *It* (2017) and *It Chapter Two* (2019), as well as roles in *John Wick: Chapter 4* (2023) as the Marquis, *Nosferatu* (2024) as Count Orlok, and *Dead Man's Wire* (2026) as Tony Kiritsis.
