> Bjørn Sundquist makes reacting to another actor worth watching. We value the patience and attention he brings to an ensemble, especially when a forceful lead could otherwise turn the other characters into people waiting to speak.

In *Zero Kelvin* (1995), Bjørn Sundquist helps keep a forceful actor from becoming the whole film. Stellan Skarsgård gives Randbæk the weight to dominate, but Sundquist's Jakob Holm and Gard B. Eidsvold's Henrik Larsen remain distinct men with a part in the struggle. We felt worn down by their antagonism, yet the differences between the three kept us interested in their company. Sundquist is valuable here because he can respond to another performance without disappearing beside it. We rate him for keeping a character interesting even when there is little pleasure in being around him.

His screen work began with *Kronprinsen* (1980), and his career has taken him from realistic roles into more poetic and theatrical work. His particular strength remains the ability to react without making a display of the reaction. Television gave him a leading part as Inspector Konrad Sejer in the *Sejer* series, beginning in 2000. The precision of his work on the detective's psychology fits the care he brings to an ensemble: the character needs to make sense even when somebody else has our attention.

Hans Petter Moland provides a strong setting for that work in *Zero Kelvin*: an isolated group whose differences cannot be reduced to a contest between brains and strength. Sundquist helps sustain those differences, although the film's persistent hostility can become restrictive. There is only so much pleasure in watching men make one another miserable, however carefully the actors distinguish them. Moland also directed him as Sven in *A Somewhat Gentle Man* (2010), where his understated supporting performance fits the dry humour. His responsiveness is useful when the scene calls for something less punishing.

Supporting others is not the limit of his usefulness: he takes the lead as Harold in *Her er Harold* (2014) and Birger Eriksen in *Blücher* (2025). Those parts are reason enough not to file him away as an ensemble specialist, though the ensemble remains our strongest reason for recommending him. Start with *Zero Kelvin* for that patient, shared acting. Allow for the fact that the characters are considerably less agreeable company than the actors.

Bjørn Sundquist is a Norwegian actor. He was born on 16 June 1948 in Hammerfest and trained at Statens Teaterskole from 1969 to 1973. He was employed at Det Norske Teatret from 1973 to 1989 and later at Nationaltheatret until 1996, after which he worked as a freelancer.

Sundquist made his film debut in *Kronprinsen* (1980). He appeared as Jakob Holm in *Zero Kelvin* (1995) and has roles in numerous Norwegian films and television series, including *Dykket* (1989), *Dead Snow* (2009) and *Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters* (2013). He has received five Amanda prizes, the Hedda Honorary Prize and other awards for his work in theatre, film and television.
