## Fi1m on Blake Harrison

> Blake Harrison makes the dim Neil Sutherland funny without turning *The Inbetweeners* into a competition for attention. We value his comic timing and his willingness to let the joke belong to someone else.

In *The Inbetweeners* (2008), Blake Harrison can make the response to a remark funnier than the remark itself. As Neil Sutherland, he is part of a quartet with Simon Bird, James Buckley and Joe Thomas, and the pleasure comes from how readily they share the work. Harrison's timing does not announce itself, which matters when the character's dimness could so easily become a laboured demonstration. We laughed at their exchanges because Harrison and his co-stars made the embarrassment feel like something happening among friends, rather than four performers taking turns.

The programme's narrow view of girls is a real limitation, and affection for Neil need not excuse it. Damon Beesley and Iain Morris give the boys plenty of adolescent boasting, and the actors do not ask us to approve of it. Harrison helps make the company enjoyable without having to make Neil more sensible. That takes judgement: play the stupidity too insistently and the viewer is left watching an actor congratulate himself on knowing better than his character.

Neil brought Harrison to prominence across three series from 2008 to 2010 and two films in 2011 and 2014. Comedy continued with *The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret* (2010) and Private Pike in *Dad's Army* (2016). Later dramatic parts include Andrew 'Gino' Newton in *A Very English Scandal* (2018) and Stan Raddings in *World on Fire* (2019). Those credits establish that he has worked beyond Neil, but they are not, by themselves, a reason to prefer the dramatic work.

Harrison has turned down further dim-witted roles, a sensible precaution against being asked to repeat one success indefinitely. We would not want to see him stuck playing Neil under different names, but a more serious part will not automatically give him something better to do. The work with Bird, Buckley and Thomas deserves credit for how little effort it advertises. Start with the television *Inbetweeners*, with its limitations in mind, and watch how often Harrison helps someone else be funny.
