He trained at the Sverdlovsk Theatre School, graduating in 1970, and later completed the Philological Faculty at Ural State University in 1983. He began his career in the Sverdlovsk Youth Theatre from 1970 to 1978 before moving to Moscow theatres including the Satire Theatre and the Central Academic Theatre of the Russian Army. Plotnikov made his film debut as Sotnikov in *The Ascent* (1977), directed by Larisa Shepitko. He appeared in more than seventy films and television series, including *Heart of a Dog* (1988) as Doctor Bormental, *The Cold Summer of 1953* (1987) and *Shadowboxing* (2005). He was named People's Artist of Russia in 1998 and received the Order of Honour in 2005.
