He trained at the Royal Dramatic Theatre school from 1962 to 1965 and has been a member of its ensemble since graduating. Ahlstedt has worked extensively with Ingmar Bergman, appearing as Carl Ekdahl in *Fanny and Alexander* (1982), Carl Åkerblom in *The Best Intentions* (1992) and *Sunday's Children* (1992), and Henrik in *Saraband* (2003). He is also known for playing Mattis in *Ronia: The Robber's Daughter* (1984) and for early roles in *I Am Curious (Yellow)* (1967) and *I Am Curious (Blue)* (1968). He has appeared in films by directors including Bo Widerberg and Kay Pollak.
