Born in London, he studied philology and began performing in theatre in the 1880s. He appeared in Broadway productions from 1900 and made his film debut in *Via Wireless* (1915). Hurst became known in the 1920s for roles as antagonists in silent films, including Sir George Carewe in *Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde* (1920), Jehan Frollo in *The Hunchback of Notre Dame* (1923), Alexei Karenin in *Love* (1927), and Barkilphedro in *The Man Who Laughs* (1928). He played Uncle George in *7th Heaven* (1927).
