In *No Man's Land* (2001), Branko Đurić's Čiki moves from absurdity to distress without seeming to become a different character. We laughed and stayed uneasy, because the humour in his performance never made the soldiers' suffering feel remote. Alongside Rene Bitorajac as Nino and Filip Šovagović as Cera, he helps make these men more varied than the film's broadest arguments permit. That ability to remain recognisably the same person when the tone changes is what we value most in his acting.

His comic background matters here. The satirical sketch series *Top lista nadrealista* brought him prominence in the 1980s, while Emir Kusturica's *Time of the Gypsies* (1988) was an early film role. The streetwise Bosnian figures, distinctive accent and wry humour have remained part of his work, but international recognition came with Čiki. By then he had the comic experience to let a joke do its job without treating it as a separate turn.

Danis Tanović's direction gives that skill a useful setting in *No Man's Land*, though the credit is not Đurić's alone. Editor Francesca Calvelli keeps the suspense alive through the jokes, allowing the actors' changes of tone to register without repeatedly stopping and starting the film. Our reservation is with the broader treatment of the media and international intervention, where the satire becomes less persuasive. Đurić and his fellow soldiers are good reasons to watch; they cannot make every surrounding argument equally convincing.

His later work has continued across comedy and war drama: he wrote, directed and played Božo in *Cheese and Jam* (2003), then worked with Tanović again as Dr Talzani in *Triage* (2009). International television work, including *Slow Horses*, has run alongside his continuing regional comedy and theatre work. Some of the sketch and directing work has relied on broader effects, and the results have been uneven. Start with *No Man's Land*, where he can be funny without giving us much reason to relax.

## Biography

Branko Đurić, also known as Đuro or Branko Djurić, is a Bosnian actor, director and musician. He was born on 28 May 1962 in Sarajevo and rose to prominence in the 1980s through the comedy series *Top lista nadrealista*. He was a founding member of the band SCH and frontman of the rock band Bombaj Štampa.

Đurić moved to Slovenia in 1992 during the Bosnian War and has lived and worked there since. He is known for his role as Čiki in the film *No Man's Land* (2001). Other film credits include *Time of the Gypsies* (1988), *Triage* (2009), *In the Land of Blood and Honey* (2011) and *See You in Montevideo* (2014). He has also appeared in television series such as *Slow Horses* (2022) and *Miss Scarlet* (2020).

He is married to Slovenian actress Tanja Ribič. Đurić has directed films including *Cheese and Jam* (2003) and leads the production company Theatre 55 in Ljubljana.
