## Fi1m on Brendan Coyle

> Brendan Coyle gives reserved men enough feeling to hold our attention without asking for sympathy. We value his steadiness in an ensemble, though the succession of brooding roles can make us wish he were given more to say.

Coyle’s men often seem to be deciding how little they need to say. John Bates in *Downton Abbey* (2010–2015) is the clearest example: his emotional restraint makes us attend to what remains unspoken. Julian Fellowes wrote the part for him, and it suits his ability to give a large period-drama ensemble some quiet humanity. We like his reluctance to press for sympathy, though repeated brooding can leave us wishing for a different assignment.

Nicholas Higgins in *North & South* (2004) and Robert Timmins in *Lark Rise to Candleford* (2008–2010) had already established him in ensemble period television. Bates brought international recognition, but the offers tended towards more dark roles. *Starlings* (2012–2013) provided a change. Coyle’s own distinction is precise: “Bates is all about what he doesn’t say and Terry is all about what he does.” We would welcome more opportunities to hear him talk.

In *Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale* (2025), Coyle returns as Bates to a film whose good manners do more work than its stories. There are a dozen of those, each proceeding towards a reconciliation, and the comfortable familiarity becomes thin. Michelle Dockery carries what dramatic weight there is. For us, this is where affection for the ensemble stops being enough: the pleasure of recognising everyone does not mean they have been given enough to play. We can enjoy having Bates back and still want Fellowes to give this farewell more substance.

The stronger recommendation is *Toxic Town* (2025), in which he plays Roy Thomas. We felt angry watching it, because Jodie Whittaker and Aimee Lou Wood give its familiar injustice story a force that the tidier, more sentimental passages sometimes lack. That recommendation rests chiefly on their performances, rather than on Coyle’s presence, and we would not pretend otherwise. His usefulness often lies in supporting an ensemble without making a display of himself, but that is not a reason to recommend everything he appears in. For a fuller introduction to Coyle himself, begin with Bates in the television series.
