The son of character actor Robert Keith, he began performing on stage and in radio as a child, appeared in a silent film at the age of three, and served in the United States Marine Corps during the Second World War before resuming his career after 1945. He played Police Chief Link Mattocks in the 1966 comedy *The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming*.
