## Biography

Brian Mertes is an American theatre and television director. He has directed episodes of several soap operas and primetime series, including 143 episodes of *Guiding Light* (1992–2009), three episodes of *Law & Order* (1997–1998), and episodes of *Another World*, *Party of Five*, *As the World Turns* and *General Hospital*.

Mertes has directed numerous world premieres of new plays in New York, including works by David Greenspan and José Rivera. He co-directed a production of *Jedermann* at the Salzburg Festival with Julian Crouch, which was filmed for television. His feature film *I Am a Seagull* was released in 2017. He has taught directing at Juilliard for two decades and at film programmes including Columbia and NYU, and serves as head of the MFA Directing Program at Brown University/Trinity Rep.

Mertes has received one Emmy Award and nominations for three Emmys and three Directors Guild of America Awards for his television work.
