## Biography

Brian Oulton (11 February 1908 – 13 April 1992) was an English character actor. Born in Liverpool, he trained at RADA and began his career in repertory theatre in Liverpool, making his professional stage debut in the late 1920s. He served in the British Army during the Second World War and returned to acting in character roles from 1946.

Oulton appeared in numerous British films and television productions, often in comic or pompous supporting parts. His credits include *Carry On Cleo* (1964) as Brutus, *Carry On Camping* (1969) as Mr Short, *Gandhi* (1982) as Clerk of Court, *Young Sherlock Holmes* (1985) as Master Snelgrove, and the Piano Owner in the *Steptoe and Son* episode "The Piano" (1962). He also played Mr Pye in *The Young Ones* (1982) and appeared in series such as *The Avengers* and *The Saint*. He worked as a stage actor and playwright, and contributed to BBC radio, including a role in *Just William*.

He was married to the actress Peggy Thorpe-Bates from 1938 until her death in 1989; they had two children.
