## Fi1m on Brittany Murphy

> Brittany Murphy brought sincerity and sharp comic timing to characters easily dismissed as ditzy. We especially like her in *Clueless*, though the repeated casting as quirky or troubled young women could become restrictive.

In *Clueless* (1995), Brittany Murphy’s Tai gives Alicia Silverstone’s Cher an eagerness to respond to, and the comedy benefits from the difference. Stacey Dash’s Dionne is more composed; Murphy brings a different energy into Cher’s social world. We warmed to Tai because Murphy lets that eagerness seem sincere, even when it is funny. Amy Heckerling’s screenplay gives the teenagers a shared slang without making them sound interchangeable. Murphy helps make that distinction clear in the performances.

Her value here depends partly on the other actors. Silverstone supplies the confidence, Dash the composure, and Murphy does not need to compete with either to make an impression. Heckerling gives those differences room, so that the supporting performances do more than keep the lead supplied with people to talk to. That matters in a comedy so concerned with clothes and status: Murphy gives us a reason to notice Tai even when Cher’s confidence might otherwise determine where we look and whose company we enjoy. The film’s thin story and loss of momentum still matter, but Murphy’s particular contribution is to make us interested in a character who might otherwise have been reduced to a collection of teenage mannerisms.

*Clueless* was the breakthrough, but the subsequent work did not stay within teenage comedy. She voiced Luanne Platter in *King of the Hill* (1997–2009), while Daisy in *Girl, Interrupted* (1999) took her into a more intense supporting part. Alex in *8 Mile* (2002) and Molly in *Uptown Girls* (2003) brought leading roles. The latter made particular use of the vulnerability she could bring to comedy, giving her something beyond the business of landing a joke.

The reservation is how often she was asked to be ditzy, offbeat or troubled. Repeated casting of that sort can make an actor’s sincerity too easy to take for granted, especially when vulnerability becomes part of the job description. We would not treat those recurring characteristics as sufficient reason to praise every role. Her comic timing deserves as much attention as that sincerity; treating her simply as a vulnerable presence misses the skill needed to keep an earnest character funny without making her seem foolish. Start with *Clueless*, and resist the temptation to watch only Silverstone.

## Biography

Brittany Murphy was an American actress and singer. Born Brittany Anne Bertolotti in Atlanta, Georgia, she moved to Los Angeles as a teenager and began her career in television before her breakthrough role as Tai Frasier in the 1995 film *Clueless*.
