## Fi1m on Bronagh Gallagher

> Bronagh Gallagher's strength is conversational timing that does not announce itself as a performance. We like her best among the unruly company of *The Commitments*, where she helps make a group worth spending time with.

In *The Commitments* (1991), nobody sounds inclined to wait for permission to speak. Bronagh Gallagher, playing Bernie McGloughlin, helps make that impatience funny alongside Angeline Ball and Maria Doyle Kennedy. We laughed because their exchanges have the untidiness of people talking, rather than actors taking care to leave each other's jokes intact. Gallagher helps make the group sound comfortable interrupting one another, without turning every line into a bid for attention.

Alan Parker deserves credit for allowing that looseness. The conversational timing is a large part of why his Dublin soul-band comedy works, and Gallagher fits a cast whose rough edges are often more appealing than its polish. There are passages when the film smooths things out too much; we prefer the moments when the performers seem less concerned with getting a laugh. Her musical skills have an obvious use here, but it is the ease of the spoken exchanges that we particularly value.

That breakthrough was followed by Trudi in *Pulp Fiction* (1994) and a Republic Cruiser Captain in *Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace* (1999). The recognisable titles can distract from the kind of career she has built, largely in supporting parts. Her stage work includes Rose Narracott in *War Horse* (2009), and she has maintained a parallel career as a singer. The recurring casting as grounded Irish or working-class women makes sense, though that description says little about the timing that makes an individual performance worth watching.

Her later television roles include Carol Dennings in *Brassic* (2019) and Booker in *How to Get to Heaven from Belfast* (2026). We liked the latter for the bluntness and affection of its central friendship, while finding the plotting less reliable. Those pleasures belong chiefly to its three leads, so it is not the place to start if Gallagher is the particular draw. For Gallagher, choose *The Commitments* and pay as much attention between the songs.
