## Biography

Brown Holmes (1907–1974) was an American screenwriter. Born Kenneth Dewitt Holmes in Toledo, Ohio, he was raised in California and graduated from Hollywood High School. His father was a newspaperman. He worked under contract for Warner Bros. from 1931 to 1936, later for Universal and 20th Century Fox.

His screenwriting credits include *The Maltese Falcon* (1931), *I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang* (1932), co-written with Howard J. Green, *20,000 Years in Sing Sing* (1932) and its remake *Castle on the Hudson* (1940). He contributed to further adaptations of Dashiell Hammett's novel and to Perry Mason films such as *The Case of the Lucky Legs* (1935).
