His work as Ash gives us good reason to value a performer whose precision can be easy to miss beneath the gore. In *Evil Dead II* (1987), Bruce Campbell has to make us believe that the monsters hurt, even when we can see how ridiculous they are. As Ash, he gives each attack the seriousness that makes the punishment funny without making it safe. We recommend the film largely because he can keep doing that when the story becomes little more than a succession of assaults. He never pauses to ask for credit for the effort. The precision is easy to miss beneath the gore. Sam Raimi makes the camera another source of trouble for Ash. Peter Deming’s unbroken point-of-view shot sends an unseen force through the woods and into the cabin, without giving us the relief of a cut. We laughed, then tensed up because the charge kept coming. Raimi’s forced perspectives make distances difficult to judge, keeping us watchful even when Campbell is being funny. The supporting characters barely register; he has to keep us involved. The collaboration began with teenage Super 8 films in Michigan, before *The Evil Dead* (1981) gave Campbell his breakthrough. *Evil Dead II* brought more comedy to Ash, and remains our clearest reason to rate him. The career around those films took in cult work, mainstream supporting parts and further leads and cameos for Raimi. In *The Hudsucker Proxy* (1994), he plays Smitty in the Coens’ screwball fantasy. We recommend it for its performances and elaborate sets, though its old Hollywood manners sometimes feel over-rehearsed. That reservation matters when considering Campbell’s broad, self-aware style: exact timing still has to feel alive. His Ash does, because the physical commitment keeps the violence from becoming harmless. Television gave him longer engagements as Sam Axe in *Burn Notice* (2007–13) and as Ash in *Ash vs Evil Dead* (2015–18). There is more to explore than the horror films, even if Ash remains the strongest reason for our interest.
