## Biography

Ellis J. "Bud" Thackery (1903–1990) was an American cinematographer. He began his career in the silent film era as a matte and glass artist and joined Republic Pictures in 1935, where he headed the process department and served as director of photography on numerous features, B-westerns and serials.

Thackery contributed process photography to *Modern Times* (1936) and was director of photography on *Coogan's Bluff* (1968). He received an Academy Award nomination, shared with others, for special photographic effects on *Women in War* (1940). After Republic closed, he worked at Universal Studios on feature films and television series including *Ironside*, *The Virginian* and *Emergency!*, retiring in 1976.
