## Fi1m on Callie Khouri

> Callie Khouri takes women's friendships and working lives seriously without requiring anyone to behave well. We value her sharp, funny dialogue, though crudely drawn supporting men and overcomplicated plots sometimes let her central characters down.

In *Thelma & Louise* (1991), two women responding to each other are enough to hold our attention. Khouri's dialogue is at its sharpest when neither has to explain what she represents. Ridley Scott keeps the danger of the crime story in view without letting it overwhelm the friendship. We were moved by that friendship because Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis make the women's responses to each other feel so unforced.

The men are another matter. Too many in that screenplay have an objectionable attitude and little else to distinguish them, making the reasons for leaving needlessly obvious. Harvey Keitel gives Hal more thought than the writing allows some of the others. Khouri is good enough at making us care about the women that these supporting caricatures feel unnecessary.

That was her first screenplay; she later moved into feature directing with *Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood* (2002), which she also adapted. Female friendship remained a concern, but the turn to television with *Nashville* (2012) brought working lives to the centre. As its creator, Khouri sets professional rivalry beside romantic melodrama, giving Rayna James and Juliette Barnes jobs worth caring about. There is room for ambition, jealousy and wounded pride, without suggesting the women ought to be above any of them.

The singing convinces, with T Bone Burnett serving as executive music producer and composer for the first season. Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere give the central rivalry enough feeling to make the excess plotting worth forgiving. Their performances let us believe in the women's abilities as well as their grievances. Khouri allows professional pride to matter as much as romantic disappointment, and that keeps the soap worth watching.

The problem is how often *Nashville* adds another complication before the existing stories have had time to develop. Its overcrowded opening is an early warning, and later choices can feel imposed on people the actors have made credible. Khouri does not always trust the characters enough to leave them with their current problems. Start with *Thelma & Louise*; stay with *Nashville* if the singers can earn your patience with the soap.
