He began on Broadway in the late 1930s and originated the role of Happy Loman in the 1949 production of Arthur Miller's *Death of a Salesman*, reprising it in the 1951 film. After serving as a bombardier in the US Army Air Forces during the Second World War, he appeared in features including *How to Marry a Millionaire* (1953) and *Carousel* (1956). Mitchell is also known for the role of Frank Braden in *Hombre* (1967) and as Buck Cannon in the television series *The High Chaparral* (1967–1971).
