## Biography

Camille Saint-Saëns was a French composer, organist, conductor and pianist of the Romantic era. Born in Paris on 9 October 1835, he was a child prodigy who gave his first public recital at the age of ten and studied at the Paris Conservatoire.

His best-known works include the symphonic poems *Danse macabre* and *Le Rouet d’Omphale*, the opera *Samson et Dalila*, the Third Symphony (Organ Symphony), the First Cello Concerto and *The Carnival of the Animals*. He was the first major composer to write an original score for a film, *The Assassination of the Duke de Guise* (1908). Saint-Saëns died in Algiers on 16 December 1921.

His music has been used in later films and television, including the finale of *The Carnival of the Animals* in *Fantasia 2000* (2000) and *Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso* in *Your Lie in April* (2014).
