## Fi1m on Campbell Scott

> Campbell Scott plays the man in the good suit who knows more than he is saying, and he plays him quietly, even when the film around him is shouting. It is a narrow trade, and his best work lies well away from the blockbusters.

Give Campbell Scott a villain and he will not raise his voice. In *Jurassic World Dominion* (2022) he is Lewis Dodgson, the head of a biotech firm with a swarm of locusts on his conscience, and where the part invites grandeur he goes small: a zipped fleece, round spectacles, the fuss of a founder who has never been told no. We called it the one surprising choice in a film that otherwise spends 147 minutes running down corridors. It is also how he has worked for thirty-five years. He does not announce a character. He waits for you to notice him.

The career runs in two halves. The first is a young leading man: a film debut in *Five Corners* (1987), a breakthrough in *Longtime Companion* (1989), then *The Sheltering Sky* (1990), *Dying Young* (1991) and *Singles* (1992). The second begins in 1996, when he and Stanley Tucci co-directed *Big Night*, and from then on he is a character actor by choice, in *The Spanish Prisoner* (1997), *Roger Dodger* (2002), where he took the lead as a cynical womaniser and critics found the performance precise and restrained, and in long runs on television in *Damages* and *House of Cards*. The franchises, *The Amazing Spider-Man* (2012) and its sequel, and the dinosaurs, came late and used him for his polish rather than for anything underneath it.

*Big Night* is the one to start with. Scott and Tucci give two brothers a failing restaurant and take the money worries seriously enough that the cooking never becomes an excuse to stop thinking about the people doing it. We came out of it fonder of a pair of quarrelling chefs than we had any right to be, and that is the directors' doing: they let the friction between the brothers sit in the frame while the food is prepared, so the meal carries the argument. Scott has said that directing makes him a more collaborative actor, and you can see it in how little he needs to be the centre of a scene.

*Damages* shows the limit of the method. He arrives in the third season as Joe Tobin, heir to a family fortune that is not what it seems, and he is exactly what the part asks for, a comfortable man discovering how much he has been protected from. By then, though, the show had run its trick of opening on a disaster and rewinding twice already, and we caught ourselves predicting the reveal around him. He does not make that better or worse. He is simply correct, which is his habit.

The usual reservation is that he never became a star, and we do not count it as one. Stars are hired to be themselves; Scott is hired to be someone you trust for forty minutes and then wonder about. Put him across a desk from your hero, give him a reason to lie, and let him keep his voice down.

## Biography

Campbell Scott is an American actor, director and producer. Born on 19 July 1961 in New York City, he is the son of actors George C. Scott and Colleen Dewhurst. He graduated from Lawrence University in 1983 and began his career with stage work before moving into film and television.

Scott made his film breakthrough in *Longtime Companion* (1989) and went on to appear in *Dying Young* (1991), *Singles* (1992) and *Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle* (1994). He co-directed *Big Night* (1996) with Stanley Tucci, in which he also acted, and the pair received awards for best new director from the New York Film Critics Circle and the Boston Society of Film Critics. Later roles include Richard Parker in *The Amazing Spider-Man* (2012) and *The Amazing Spider-Man 2* (2014), Mark Usher in *House of Cards* (2013–2018) and Lewis Dodgson in *Jurassic World Dominion* (2022).
