## Biography

Carl Benton Reid was an American actor. He trained at Carnegie Tech and spent seven years in leading roles at the Cleveland Play House before achieving Broadway success in 1939 as Oscar Hubbard in the original production of *The Little Foxes*.

He made his film debut reprising the role in the 1941 screen version opposite Bette Davis. Reid appeared in other Broadway productions including several Shakespeare plays and the original *The Iceman Cometh*. His stern screen persona led to frequent casting in authoritative or antagonistic parts in films such as *In a Lonely Place* (1950), *The Egyptian* (1954) and *Pork Chop Hill* (1959).

He made guest appearances on series including *Perry Mason* and *The Andy Griffith Show*. Reid died in 1973.
