## Biography

Carl Hoffmann (1885–1947) was a German cinematographer and film director. He trained as a photographer in Freiburg, worked in a photographic laboratory and as a cinema projectionist, and moved to Berlin, where he became chief cameraman at Decla-Filmgesellschaft in 1916.

He photographed numerous silent films, including *Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler* (1922) and the two-part *Die Nibelungen* (1924) for Fritz Lang, and *Faust* (1926) for F. W. Murnau. His later credits include *Variety* (1925) and several sound films of the 1930s. He also directed a number of features from the late 1920s onwards.

His son, Kurt Hoffmann, became a film director.
