## Biography

Carl Junghans was a German film director, screenwriter and editor. Born in Dresden in 1897, he began working in film in the 1920s, initially contributing to compilation documentaries associated with Prometheus Film.

He directed the 1930 silent feature *Takový je život* (Such is Life) in Czechoslovakia and later *Jugend der Welt* (1936), the official film of the Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. He served as one of the cinematographers on Leni Riefenstahl’s *Olympia* (1938) and worked on documentaries about the Spanish Civil War.

Junghans emigrated during the Second World War, later working in the United States before returning to Germany in 1963. In 1975 he received the Filmband in Gold for his contributions to German film.
