## Biography

Carl Kleinschmitt was an American television writer and producer. Born in Los Angeles on 28 August 1937, he began his career in the mid-1960s, writing for *The Joey Bishop Show* after meeting future producer Garry Marshall.

He wrote nine episodes of *The Dick Van Dyke Show* (1965–1966), often with partner Dale McRaven, and two episodes of *M*A*S*H* (1973), including “Sometimes You Hear the Bullet,” for which he received a Writers Guild of America nomination. His other credits include episodes of *Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.*, *The Doris Day Show*, *Welcome Back, Kotter* and *The Love Boat*. He created the sitcoms *Funny Face* (later retitled *The Sandy Duncan Show*) and the HBO series *1st & Ten* (1984–1990).

Kleinschmitt also wrote the screenplay for the feature *Middle Age Crazy* (1980). He died in Los Angeles on 8 December 2022.
