Carl Mayer (20 November 1894 – 1 July 1944) was an Austrian screenwriter. He was born in Graz, Styria, Austria-Hungary, and died in London. His screenplays include *The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari* (1920), co-written with Hans Janowitz, and *Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans* (1927).

Mayer wrote or co-wrote the screenplays for several films directed by F. W. Murnau, including *The Last Laugh* (1924), *Tartuffe* (1926) and *4 Devils* (1928). He also contributed to *The Haunted Castle* (1921) and *Genuine: The Tragedy of a Vampire* (1920). His work was associated with German Expressionist cinema and the Kammerspielfilm.
