## Biography

Carlos Coimbra was a Brazilian film editor, director and screenwriter. He edited *O Pagador de Promessas* (The Given Word, 1962), directed by Anselmo Duarte, which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes.

He directed several films in the cangaço cycle, including *A Morte Comanda o Cangaço* (1960), which was entered in the Berlin International Film Festival, as well as *Lampião, o Rei do Cangaço* (1964), *Cangaceiros de Lampião* (1967) and *Corisco, o Diabo Loiro* (1969). Other notable directorial work includes the historical drama *Independência ou Morte* (1972).

Coimbra was born in Campinas, São Paulo, and died in São Paulo on 14 February 2007.
