## Biography

Carmen Dillon (1908–2000) was an English art director and production designer. She trained as an architect before entering the film industry in the 1930s and worked extensively for British studios including Two Cities and Rank.

She is known for her work on films including *Hamlet* (1948), for which she became the first woman to win an Academy Award for art direction (set decoration); *The Importance of Being Earnest* (1952); *The Prince and the Showgirl* (1957); *The Go-Between* (1971); *The Omen* (1976); and *Julia* (1977), on which she served as production designer. She also contributed to several television productions and trained other notable art directors.

Dillon remained active until the late 1970s. Her career spanned more than four decades and included collaborations with directors such as Laurence Olivier and Joseph Losey.
