## Biography

Carmen Mathews was an American actress. She studied at Bennett Junior College and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, and began her professional career with the Stratford-on-Avon Shakespearean Company, where she played roles including Ophelia in *Hamlet*.

Her film credits include *BUtterfield 8* (1960), *Rabbit, Run* (1970), *Sounder* (1972) as Mrs. Boatwright, and *Daniel* (1983). On television she appeared in episodes of *The Twilight Zone* (1961), *Alfred Hitchcock Presents* and as Colonel Lillian Rayburn in *M*A*S*H* (1978). She also had a long career on Broadway.

Mathews was an environmentalist who established and ran a residential summer camp for disadvantaged children on her farm in Redding, Connecticut. She died in 1995.
