## Biography

Carole Shelley (16 August 1939 – 31 August 2018) was an English actress who worked extensively in the United States and the United Kingdom. She was born in London and became a naturalised US citizen.

She originated the role of Gwendolyn Pigeon in the 1965 Broadway production of *The Odd Couple*, reprising it in the 1968 film and early episodes of the television series. Other stage work included originating Madame Morrible in *Wicked* and a Tony Award-winning performance as Mrs Kendal in *The Elephant Man* (1979). She received further Tony nominations for *Absurd Person Singular* (1975), *Stepping Out* (1987) and *Billy Elliot the Musical* (2009).

Shelley provided voices for several Disney animated films, including Amelia Gabble in *The Aristocats* (1970) and Lady Kluck in *Robin Hood* (1973). Her other screen credits include appearances in *Quiz Show* (1994), *Jungle 2 Jungle* (1997), *Bewitched* (2005) and episodes of *Frasier* and *Law & Order: Special Victims Unit*.
