## Fi1m on Carrie Fisher

> Carrie Fisher gave outspoken women a dry wit and a way of speaking that left little room for nonsense. We prize her contribution to *Star Wars*, though Leia can make the rest of her acting work too easy to overlook.

Carrie Fisher delivers a sharp line as though there were no reason to soften it. In *Star Wars* (1977), that directness makes Princess Leia Organa good company inside George Lucas’s adventure, where creatures and machinery might otherwise occupy most of our attention. She helps give the people something to offer as well. Harrison Ford’s Han Solo is another source of that liveliness, and Fisher deserves her share of the credit for keeping the human scenes entertaining. We found her company cheering, because her sharp delivery helped keep the adventure from becoming too solemn.

There are still stiff exchanges in *Star Wars*, and Fisher cannot make every conversation lively. What she brings is a welcome impatience with the sort of dutiful speech that can weigh down a space adventure. Her sardonic manner gives Leia an independence we can hear, without needing to be told about it. The part remained central through *The Empire Strikes Back* (1980) and *Return of the Jedi* (1983). It also became so dominant in her career that opportunities for other leading parts were limited.

Through the 1980s and 1990s, supporting roles ran alongside her work as a novelist and script doctor. Marie in *When Harry Met Sally...* (1989) is a useful place to look beyond Leia, and to hear that comic delivery in a different setting. She also adapted her 1987 novel *Postcards from the Edge* for the screen in 1990. The difficulty in assessing her acting is that there are comparatively few substantial parts to weigh against Leia. We should not fill those gaps with praise for performances she never had the chance to give.

The return to Leia in *Star Wars: The Force Awakens* (2015) underlines how firmly that part shaped her screen career. It need not dictate how we watch everything else. We value Fisher’s ability to make an outspoken character sound as though speaking plainly were the only sensible option. Start with *Star Wars*, where that contribution sits inside a film we recommend with little hesitation. Then try *When Harry Met Sally...*, rather than asking Leia to account for everything.

## Biography

Carrie Frances Fisher (1956–2016) was an American actress and writer. She was the daughter of actress Debbie Reynolds and singer Eddie Fisher. She trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London and made her film debut in *Shampoo* (1975).

Fisher is best known for portraying Princess Leia Organa in *Star Wars* (1977), *The Empire Strikes Back* (1980) and *Return of the Jedi* (1983). She reprised the role in later films including *Star Wars: The Force Awakens* (2015). She also wrote the novel *Postcards from the Edge* (1987) and its screenplay adaptation (1990), and worked as a script doctor on several films.
