Her one substantial screen role works because she and Sigourney Weaver make the need for protection convincing, even when the writing presses too hard. Carrie Henn's Newt needs protection, but Henn makes us believe she has also learnt how to survive. In *Aliens* (1986), that combination gives Sigourney Weaver's Ripley someone to care for who is more than a reason to keep the action going. Beside marines who can feel like stock types, Henn gives us a particular person to worry about. We recommend the film strongly, with the relationship between these two among its chief strengths. James Cameron's screenplay is most convincing when Ripley's concern takes the form of practical work rather than declarations of feeling. We were moved by that care because Henn makes Newt's need for it believable without erasing the child's resilience. Weaver does the more complicated acting, allowing fear to remain visible beneath Ripley's competence, but the scenes need Henn's directness too. The writing sometimes insists too heavily on the maternal bond; the performances have already given us enough to understand it. Henn was cast at nine with no previous acting experience, and she fits into the experienced ensemble without appearing to compete with it. Inexperience is no guarantee of a convincing performance, but here the lack of polish keeps the distress from seeming rehearsed. Her scenes with Weaver depend on both performers making that connection believable, and Henn holds up her end without drawing attention away from Ripley. There is little sense that she is asking us to admire how convincingly she can be frightened. She left acting after the film's release, so there is no succession of roles against which to test that success. One substantial part cannot tell us how she would fare with another director or as an adult performer, and we should not pretend otherwise. Nor does her departure make the work less worth considering on its own. See *Aliens* for Weaver, certainly, but pay attention to how much Henn gives her to care about. ## Biography Carrie Henn is an American former actress and schoolteacher. Born Caroline Marie Henn on 7 May 1976 in Panama City, Florida, she played Rebecca 'Newt' Jorden in the 1986 film *Aliens*. Henn had no prior acting experience when she was cast after being spotted at her school in England, where her father was stationed with the US Air Force. Her performance earned her the Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor. She is the sister of actor Christopher Henn, who appeared in a deleted scene from the same film. *Aliens* was her only feature-film acting credit. Henn left acting after *Aliens* and later graduated from California State University, Stanislaus. She has appeared as herself in documentaries including the 2019 series *The Movies That Made Us* and works as an elementary school teacher in California. *Sources: avp.fandom.com, en.wikipedia.org, imdb.com, thefamouspeople.com.* ## On Fi1m (1) - *Aliens* (1986), Fi1m 91, as Newt — [page](https://film.one/film/aliens.md) ## Complete filmography (1) Every credit, newest first.
