## Fi1m on Castulo Guerra

> Doctors, priests, judges and traffickers: Castulo Guerra is the Argentine face Hollywood reaches for when it needs a foreigner with some authority, and for forty years he has filled those parts without fuss in films that rarely stop to thank him.

In the desert stretch of *Terminator 2: Judgment Day* (1991), Sarah Connor needs weapons and a truck, and Enrique Salceda gives her both. That is the whole of the part. Our review of the film does not mention him, and it did not need to: the scene works, the plot moves, and nobody in the audience is asked to think about the man who made it possible. That is the trade Castulo Guerra has been in since his film debut in *Two of a Kind* in 1983, and he is good at it.

He came to it sideways. Born in Córdoba, Argentina, he studied medicine before drama, moved to New York in 1972 for experimental theatre, and did stage work including the New York Shakespeare Festival before Los Angeles and the studios claimed him. What the studios wanted was a certain kind of face and a certain kind of voice, and they used both for authority figures and criminals in roughly equal measure. He has said as much himself, in Spanish, to a newspaper back home: "Ponerle cara foránea a los malos es una tradición de Hollywood." Giving the villains a foreign face is a Hollywood tradition. He does not sound bitter about it. He sounds like a man describing the weather.

The parts are small and the films around them are often large. Arturro Marquez in *The Usual Suspects* (1995), in the interrogation scenes. A Spanish priest in Spielberg's *Amistad* (1997). Joe, the pawnshop owner, in *The Mexican* (2001), a film we thought too long for its one joke and in which, again, our review found no reason to single him out. Barney in *The Purge: Anarchy* (2014). None of these is a role you go to the cinema for. All of them are roles a film goes wrong without.

We will admit that in *Terminator 2* he reassured us, and we have thought about why. Everyone else in that film is running or killing. Salceda does neither. He stands in the heat and hands things over, and the calm of it lets the picture breathe for a few minutes before the machines start again. Cameron's middle section drifts into sentiment, as our review said, but it does not drift while Guerra is on screen. He is steadying in the way a good bit-part actor is steadying: by doing less than the scene allows.

We have no collaborator to name who gets the best out of him, because the pattern of his career is that nobody has tried. If you want to see what he does, watch the desert in *Terminator 2* and notice the moment you stop worrying about the plot. That is him, and it is over before you can give him the credit.
