## Biography

Cat Stevens, born Steven Demetre Georgiou on 21 July 1948 in London, is a British singer-songwriter who has also recorded as Yusuf and Yusuf Islam. He began his career in the 1960s and achieved international success with albums such as *Tea for the Tillerman* (1970) and *Teaser and the Firecat* (1971).

Stevens contributed music to several films. He wrote and performed 'But I Might Die Tonight' for Jerzy Skolimowski's *Deep End* (1971). His songs also featured prominently in Hal Ashby's *Harold and Maude* (1971). After converting to Islam in 1977 he largely withdrew from pop music before returning in the 2000s as Yusuf/Cat Stevens.
