## Fi1m on Cate Blanchett

> Cate Blanchett is especially good at showing how hard a composed woman is thinking. We trust her most when she allows uncertainty into the performance; even her precision cannot make a distant film feel involving.

At dinner in *Black Bag* (2025), Cate Blanchett's Kathryn St. Jean watches her husband turn hospitality into an interrogation and keeps her knowledge to herself. Blanchett plays her as amused and a beat ahead, which makes sitting at the end of a table an active occupation. We can see her assessing him without being invited to admire the effort. She makes us watch for a change in her face.

The breakthrough was *Elizabeth* (1998), directed by Shekhar Kapur, who lets her be much less guarded. The young queen has intelligence and an appetite for life, but Blanchett leaves room for uncertainty rather than playing the queen as ready for every challenge. We were frightened for her during the treason accusations because her openness made her look so exposed. Cinematographer Remi Adefarasin and production designer John Myhre make the court impressively oppressive, sometimes more insistently than the performance needs. Kapur gets something valuable from her here: we believe there is a private life worth protecting.

*The Good German* (2006) shows how little even this precision can achieve without a story that involves us. Steven Soderbergh shoots and cuts the film himself, using hard, directional light, while Philip Messina supplies rubble and doorways and Thomas Newman's orchestral strings press for emotion. Blanchett's Lena Brandt fits the period styling with her walk and her carefully rationed flickers of feeling. She holds the film together, particularly opposite George Clooney, but the film keeps us at a distance despite her efforts.

She took on a fractured character in *Blue Jasmine* (2013) and brought concentrated intensity to *Tár* (2022). The risk of such precise acting is mannerism: we can start noticing the decisions before we believe the person. That is why the uncertainty she allows into *Elizabeth* matters so much.

The return to Soderbergh in *Black Bag* is welcome because he gives her room to be funny. Opposite Michael Fassbender's near-motionless George, she plays Kathryn more broadly without making the marriage seem less credible. Ellen Mirojnick's long coats and sharp tailoring help, but the rapport between the actors matters more than their clothes. The mystery is tidier than it is gripping. Choose it for the marriage, rather than the solution to the puzzle.

## Biography

Cate Blanchett is an Australian actor, born on 14 May 1969 in Melbourne, Victoria. She trained at the National Institute of Dramatic Art and began her career on the Australian stage, appearing in productions including *Electra* (1992) and *Hamlet* (1994).

Blanchett is known for her role as Galadriel in *The Lord of the Rings* trilogy (2001–2003) and the *Hobbit* films (2012–2014), as well as performances in *The Curious Case of Benjamin Button* (2008) and *Thor: Ragnarok* (2017).
