She was born on 13 July 1948 in Bressuire, Deux-Sèvres. Breillat acted as Mouchette in Bernardo Bertolucci's *Last Tango in Paris* (1972). She made her directorial debut with *A Real Young Girl* (1976) and has since written and directed numerous features, including *Romance* (1999) and *Fat Girl* (2001), on which she is also credited as screenwriter. Her sister, Marie-Hélène Breillat, is an actress.
