Catherine Butterfield is an American playwright, screenwriter and actress. Born on 5 February 1958 in Manhattan, New York City, she was raised primarily in Minnesota and Massachusetts. She graduated from Southern Methodist University with a BFA in drama and began her career as a regional theatre actress before turning to playwriting.

Her breakthrough came with the 1992 Manhattan Theatre Club production of her play *Joined at the Head*, which she also starred in. Subsequent plays include *Life in the Trees* and *The Sleeper*. In television she has worked as a writer and producer on series including *Party of Five* (1996), *Fame L.A.*, *Ghost Whisperer* and *Grimm*.
