Charles Bates, also credited as James Charles Bates, was an American child actor. He is known for his role as Roger Newton in Alfred Hitchcock's *Shadow of a Doubt* (1943). He appeared in numerous films between the early 1940s and 1952, often in small or uncredited parts, including *I Married a Witch* (1942), *Son of Dracula* (1943), *Pursued* (1947), *Shockproof* (1949) and *The Snows of Kilimanjaro* (1952).

After retiring from acting, Bates studied electrical engineering and worked for the State of California, retiring in 1996 as a senior electrical engineer. He lived in the Pacific Northwest in later life and died in Spokane, Washington, in May 2023.
