## Biography

Charles Bennett (2 August 1899 – 15 June 1995) was an English playwright and screenwriter. Born in Shoreham-by-Sea, Sussex, he began writing plays as a child and worked as an actor on stage before serving in the First World War. He later concentrated on playwriting, achieving success with *Blackmail* (1928), which Alfred Hitchcock adapted into a film in 1929.

Bennett collaborated extensively with Hitchcock on several British thrillers, including *The Man Who Knew Too Much* (1934), *The 39 Steps* (1935), *Secret Agent* (1936), *Sabotage* (1936) and *Young and Innocent* (1937). He moved to Hollywood in the late 1930s, where he contributed to *Foreign Correspondent* (1940), for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. His later credits include work for Cecil B. DeMille and Irwin Allen, as well as the screenplay for *Night of the Demon* (1957).
