## Biography

Charles C. Mann is an American journalist and author specialising in scientific topics. He graduated from Amherst College in 1976 and has written for publications including *The Atlantic*, *Science* and *Wired*.

His books include *1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus* (2005), which won the National Academies Communication Award, and *1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created* (2011). He has also written for television, including the *Law & Order* episode 'Scoundrels' (1994) and *Freedom Riders* (2009).

Mann is a three-time National Magazine Award finalist and recipient of awards from the American Bar Association, the American Institute of Physics, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the Lannan Foundation.
