## Biography

Charles Denner (29 May 1926 – 10 September 1995) was a French actor. Born to a Jewish family in Tarnów, Poland, he moved to France at the age of four. He trained at the drama school of Charles Dullin and joined the Théâtre National Populaire in the late 1940s.

Denner appeared in more than thirty films over three decades, often in supporting roles. He worked with directors including Louis Malle in *Elevator to the Gallows* (1958), Claude Chabrol in *Landru* (1963), Costa-Gavras in *Z* (1969) as Manuel, François Truffaut in *The Bride Wore Black* (1968) and *The Man Who Loved Women* (1977), and Claude Lelouch. He received César nominations for performances in *Si c'était à refaire* (1976) and *The Man Who Loved Women* (1977). Stage work remained central to his career.
